In 1859, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Enterprise (better known as the A&P chain of grocers) in Maryland launched the company that would later become Eight O’Clock coffee. Bagged and roasted coffee has always been a primary priority for the firm. The firm changed its name to Eight O’Clock after a customer survey in 1919 found that most Americans preferred to drink their coffee at either eight a.m. or eight p.m.
